Lil' Blonde Darling: Lil' Kim!

Blonde Beauty Icon Lil' Kim

Well, I have honestly struggled with trying to add a bit of racial diversity to the blog. There are very few women of color brave enough to blonde...and the bravest is obviously Lil' Kim! A native NY'er from Bed-Sty, Brooklyn, Kimberly Jones spent most of her youth living on the streets and working odd jobs. When she met her future mentor, rap superstar The Notorious B.I.G, her musical career jumped off. Christened Lil' Kim as a reference to her 4'11" height, Biggie recruited her into his posse of rap protegees, dubbed Junior M.A.F.I.A. and they released an album in 1995. Because of her overtly sexual yet tough persona and barely there, $tripper chic outfits, she soon began making guest appearances on several hip-hop albums before releasing her debut solo album, Hard Core in 1996. By the time she released her 2nd album The Notorious K.I.M. in 2000, she transformed herself into an over-the-top, blonde Barbie doll (with baby blue contacts, even)! With wigs in every style, lashes for days, and bling everywhere, she certainly pushed the limits of good taste (as any good iconoclast should). She has posed for photographer David LaChapelle numerous times, and modeled for everything from Candies to Versace to Baby Phat. Her use of extremely explicit sexual lyrics and provocative, tarty image, made her the biggest female rap star of the 90's/early 2000's. Word.
